Museums in Patras

ARCHEOLOGICAL MUSEUM

It is one of the most interesting archeological museums in Greece. Findings from the Classic, Hellenistic and Roman periods such as mosaics, earthen and alabaster pots are on exhibition. Especially interesting are marble statue of the goddess Athena, a large Roman mosaic pavement and ceramics dating back to the Classic and Hellenistic periods

ETHNOLOGICAL-HISTORICAL MUSEUM

The exhibits include weapons from 1770 onwards, gravures, paintings, precious manuscripts and other historical relics mainly from the Greek Independence war in 1821.

FOLK MUSEUM

This museum includes artifacts exhibiting the way of life and production in the pre-industrial society.

PRESS MUSEUM

It includes local newspapers since 1875, local magazines, Peloponnesian documents and books. One of the most important exhibits of this museum is the official document sent by the 3rd National Assembly to the Prime Minister of Greece Ioannis Kapodistrias (1827).

ARCHIVES OF THE PUBLIC LIBRARY

In the center of Patras, beside the former city hall, is situated the public library which is one of the biggest in the country. It disposes 120,000 books, a record of the local newspapers, historical documents, a rich art gallery, photographic material and gravures. In a special room books of inestimable price are kept. The ground floor is used as a Municipal Gallery.
