CARNIVAL
Patras carnival
has its own peculiar character, something that nobody can find elsewhere in the
world. At the beginning of the 20th century , the first carnival comities made
their appearance and musical songs relating to the carnival were composed.
In the post war period,
Patras Carnival moves ambitiously on two axes, the parade and the private
balls.
In 1966, the game of the
"hidden treasure" was first introduced and has ever since proved a
great success with the young people.
Masquerades take place
during the carnival period and the big parade on the Sunday before Ash
Wednesday is the culminating point of the Carnival celebrations.
Since it was established
fifteen years ago world famous Greek and international artists have
participated in it with great success.
The main venues
are the Ancient Odeiom, the Castle of Patras the old Municipal Hospital and the
Municipal Gallery .
