Churches-monuments in Patras
H.C. ÏF PANTOCRATOR
(ALMIGHTY)
On the site of a temple dedicated to the 0lympion Zeus
a church was bui1t around 900 AD. During the Turkish occupation it was turned
into a mosque. In 1828 it was used as a hospital by the army of French Marsha1
Maison. Today's church is a small sized copy of the Saint Sophia church in
Constantinople. The H.C. of Pantocrator was Patras first cathedral.

H.C. OF SAINT NIKOLAS
The Latins built this church
which was first used as a monastery . At the end of the Frankish period it was
transformed into a cathedral.
ANGLICAN CHURCH (ST ANDREW)
The Anglican community of Patras had this church built in 1872. It is built in the neo-gothic style with granit stones that came from Scotland by ship.

The two churches dedicated
to Saint Andrew are a place of pilgrimage. The smaller which is a basilica was
erected between 1836 and 1843 by the architect Lyssandros Kaftanzoglou on the
site of an older one destroyed by the Turks. Á much bigger one was founded in
1908 and was completed in 1974. It is the biggest church in the Balkans. Its dome
reaches a height of 46m and it can accommodate up to 5,500 persons. Apostle
Andrew's head and the cross of his martyrdom are kept in special cases inside
the church.

Among other important
churches the following should be mentioned : the H.C. of Evanngelist, the H.C.
of Pantanassa, the H.C. of Saint Dimitrios etc.
